2012 Kurt Hahn Award Recipient: Steve Hassenfelt, OBCP Board Member

Please join us in extending a huge congratulations to our Board Member, Stephen Hassenfelt, the 2012 Kurt Hahn Award Recipient!

Please see the official announcement below.

Dear Friends & Trustees of Outward Bound,

It is a privilege to announce Stephen C. Hassenfelt as this year’s Kurt Hahn Award recipient. This award, named in honor of the founder of Outward Bound, is presented annually to a person who exemplifies outstanding service to our mission. It is awarded to an individual who made a contribution through his or her life’s work on behalf of others all while demonstrating the values and ideals of Kurt Hahn.

Steve’s Outward Bound involvement and efforts are herculean. Steve’s embodiment of Hahn’s ideals beams in each of the four Outward Bound Boards he currently serves. As a founding board member for the Center for Peacebuilding, his vision, energy and intellectual force assisted in creative uses of the Outward Bound model, including support of startup efforts for a school in Rwanda and the creation of the Outward Bound Israel School where he was also a founding board member. Likewise, the success of North Carolina Outward Bound School is in part credited to Steve’s strategic vision and leadership, as well as his honest and open discourse, as a NCOBS board member and former Chairman.

As Chair of the Finance Committee of the OBUSA Board, he committed countless hours of volunteer time to determine a new course of action for Outward Bound; his enterprising curiosity and creativity lead us to a course that has brought new life to Outward Bound. Steve was the architect behind the disaffiliation, understanding the multifaceted legal and financial needs. Untold hours were spent travelling the country explaining Outward Bound’s route to survival, answering questions, and addressing complex details, all with integrity and an undefeatable spirit.

Furthermore, Steve was the principal architect of the National Program Service Association (NPSA), an association created to serve as the marketing arm for the National Wilderness Programs. This association will assist in assuring the success of nine of the re-emerging schools. After much deliberation, Steve agreed to accept the appointment as Board Chair of the NPSA and is currently providing critical and skilled leadership to the organization.

Steve has done all this while serving as Chairman and CEO of Granville Capital, Inc., a privately-owned SEC Registered Investment Advisor. Steve’s exceptional commitment to his family and their collective support of Outward Bound is extraordinary. An alumni of OB West, Steve continues to devote tremendous amounts of energy and leadership in the pursuit of the Outward Bound mission, to achieve more than ever thought possible and to create a better world.

Please join me in congratulating Steve on this service recognition and thanking him for his commitment to Outward Bound.
